Environmental Sustainability

The environment was, arguably, the first topic associated with sustainability in the UK.  In the mid-20th century, ecologically active organisations brought attention to the fact that the world’s environmental resources were depleting at an ever-increasing rate.
Since those early debates and the globalisation of ecological issues, the UK Government, in association with other governments worldwide, has put in place targets to ensure that resource depletion does not have the devastating impacts on the world that early commentators warned of.  Public sector organisations have been encouraged to consider the wider issues associated with their procurement policies.
In support of its Public Sector clients, LHC and its Appointed Companies are committed to delivering environmental sustainability through LHC framework arrangements, by ensuring that we have policies that address the following.
Environmental Management
LHC Companies are required to maintain effective Environmental Management Systems in accordance with BS EN ISO 14001
Sustainable Sourcing of Materials
LHC Companies are required to have policies for obtaining full accreditation for sustainable sourcing of all materials either by signing up to accredited schemes (where available) or having policies that address the responsible sourcing and managing of raw and recycled products and materials on site and in their administrative offices and factories.
Provision of Low Carbon Products and Services
LHC supplier companies maintain policies that address the development and continual improvement of products that offer potential for carbon and energy reduction in use, and LHC contractor or installation companies maintain policies that pro-actively promote the use of low energy and carbon impact products and services.
Carbon Control
LHC companies maintain policies that promote and control their own reductions in carbon, energy use and emissions control.
Water and Waste Management
LHC companies maintain policies that address reduction in water usage, management of their legal obligations under the Site Waste Management Plans Regulations (2008) and waste reduction by efficient project planning and management of materials.
