The UK Government has committed the public sector to playing a key role in furthering sustainable development so that by 2009, the UK is recognised as amongst the leaders in sustainable procurement across EU member states.
Sustainable Development is defined in social, environmental and economic terms and encompasses all issues where procurement is seen as having a role in meeting today’s needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own requirements.
Construction is the single biggest “customer” in the UK, responsible for over 40% of UK materials consumption, including fuel use.
With the potential to shift the market and stimulate higher standards, LHC Network has fully embraced the Government’s drive towards sustainable development and specifically its challenge to be recognised as a leader in sustainable procurement.
Through shared experiences and collaborative initiatives, LHC Network presents to members ‘green solutions’ and an integrated sustainable solution. LHC Expertise is now available to public sector officers seeking technical advice on the requirements to achieve sustainability.
LHC itself is also developing a Sustainability and Action Plan in line with Government guidelines and specifically, “Procuring the Future’: The Sustainable Procurement National Action Plan.
